Treaty Negotiations Minister Michael Cullen today signed terms of negotiation with Ngati Whatua o Kaipara.
The claims relate mainly to land purchased by the Crown. They have been under discussion for 16 years and two Waitangi Tribunal reports have been issued.
“It is important that the Crown and the South Kaipara claims committee are now commencing negotiations for the settlement of these historical Treaty claims,” Dr Cullen said.

29 May 2008 Sofia _ Asen Asenov, director of Bulgaria’s Customs Agency has confirmed that he and his two deputies have resigned.
Asenov cited fatigue and personal reasons for the move, but media reports suggest Prime Minister Sergey Stanishev personally requested Asenov’s resignation as part of an effort to restructure public administration and fight corruption. However Asenov claimed he faced to no pressure to resign. “We have realized the task that we came for - to prepare the administration for membership of the European Union. I think we did this successfully,” Asenov said, hinting he had had talks with the Finance Minister about a possible resignation earlier but he had to remain on his post to ensure the stabile functioning of the agency during Bulgaria’s first year in the bloc. more

MILLIONS of pounds of fines could have to be refunded after a landmark ruling found several speed limits on Hamp-shire’s roads are not legally enforceable.
Experts say a judge’s decision yesterday opens the door to thousands of motorists to claim their money back, but that could be just the tip of the iceberg.
District Judge Philip Gillibrand yesterday dismissed the last of 14 test cases against motorists allegedly caught speeding along the A27 in and around Fareham.
He ruled that simple errors in the way signs were positioned meant the speed limits essentially had no backing in law.
Legal experts who uncovered the failings say they have seen the same mistakes time and time again across the county, which they described as “a signing disaster zone”. more

Nor is it an attempt, particularly, to give a human face to a sometimes inhumane trade. It’s just a fact, and blindingly obvious. Sorry about that.
In this trade we know a little about a lot of things, but there are many things we can never know. How does it really feel to be Tony Blair, or a suicide bomber, or a Saudi princeling? What, if anything, goes on in the mind of a movie star, or a Darfur refugee, or a musical prodigy? We can do youinformation, speculation, andempathy, sometimes. Omniscience is not our game. But parenthood?
That’s a species marker, more often than not. It’s the reason why new fathers and mothers will bore you witless over dinner with the one topic of which they never tire. It is the subject upon which anyone who has reproduced is an expert, self-appointed. more

Ever since my friend used his BMI to get a gastric bypass covered under his health insurance, I don’t put much faith in it. For the record he wasn’t obese he was just fat. Obesity is not a desease it’s a life choice. I know what you’re all thinking “I’m made this way, I can’t help it.” Bullshit. I understand that no one is made the same. Some are larger than others. But when your arms don’t hang down, you’re far too fat. When you waddle, your too fat. Every one can be fit. You don’t have to have 3% body fat you just have to put some effort into it. It’s the reason I’m still skinny, every time I get a potbelly I start working out.

First of all, the BMI scale is a ridiculously general measurement. more

Sorry, but we at Law Enforcement Against Prohibition know better than to engage in the “how to regulate” conversation. We’re law enforcement, not legislators. We enforce laws, not create them.
Q: Do you know where I can get some really good drugs?
A: No. I don’t condone drug use and it’s still illegal. If you want some “good drugs”, then help us make it legal. Then we can stop putting you and your friends in prison.
Tony Ryan is a board member of and speaker for Law Enforcement Against Prohibition, LEAP. (www.leap.cc) He was a police officer in Denver for 36 years, serving as either a supervisor or commander for 26 of those years. He lives in Sioux Falls.

Last year, the Fish was very close to pulling off the upset of Madison, but was edged in the finals of the Alabama Parks and Recreation State Tournament.
“We don’t worry about beating Madison anymore,” Reynolds said. “They have a great program, and the city of Madison is building a indoor pool so they can practice year around and with the extra practice they will just get better. But we’ll field a good team this summer.”
Reynolds says his numbers are fewer in some age groups, but is looking forward to being especially competitive in the older age divisions.
“We’re maybe down a little in our 9-10, 11-12 years girls, but our 11-12, 13-14 boys will be very good,” Reynolds said. “Maybe our younger ages will not be as strong, but I have to be excited with the kids we have returning. more

When introducing McCain at a Cincinnati rally, a radio talk show host used Sen. Obama’s middle name three times, prompting McCain to apologize, even though he, himself, had done nothing more.If McCain and Obama can stay above such petty issues throughout the rest of the presidential campaign, maybe this year’s choice for president could end up being one everyone takes pride in.STEPHEN HEMELT is city editor for The Daily Iberian. This past December, Joye competed in the Alabama High School Meet at Auburn University. He set state records in the 200-yard individual medley and the 500-yard freestyle, winning both events. The 500-yard freestyle record had been standing since 1983. “I started swimming with the Prattville Flying Fish when I was 5-years-old,” Joye said. At 8, he started swimming with the Montgomery YMCA Barracudas and “Just before my 14th birthday, I decided to go year-round swimming with the Barracudas,” he said, adding “I’ve been competing every since.” He was selected to attend the USA Swimming National Select Camp at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs this past October. He says that while competing in the Olympics is a long-shot, he would like to do so in 2012. Joye is the grandson of Loretta Joye of Marion. more

Bangladesh:
Blogger News Network writes an article on the Biswa Ijtema, an annual global Islamic meet, on the banks of river Turag on the outskirts of the Bangladesh capital Dhaka. Around three million devotees attended the closing prayers this Sunday, many walking miles as traffic was suspended to give way. This is the second biggest Muslim congregation after hajj.
In less then a month of the state of emergency the traffic jams and chaos in Bangladesh had diminished. more
